NCSE's executive director Ann Reid discussed climate change education on WAMU 88.5's nationally distributed 1A radio show on April 23, 2019, along with Leah Qusba, deputy director of the Alliance for Climate Education, and Daniel Morales-Doyle, a science education professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Reid described (starting at the 19:30 mark) the NCSE/Penn State survey of climate change educators (PDF), observing that the most troubling result was that only 40% of the teachers surveyed were aware that over 80% of climate scientists (the actual figure is about 97%, according to multiple independent studies) agree that the climate is changing and humans are largely responsible. She added that fewer than half of the teachers surveyed reported having completed any formal coursework on climate change.
Asked toward the end of the show (starting at the 43:20 mark) for her advice to public school teachers, Reid suggested lesson plans from NCSE and resources from CLEAN. She also emphasized the need for citizens to encourage their local school districts to ensure that teachers receive the resources they need to teach climate change effectively.
