NCSE is pleased to congratulate Michael E. Mann, who along with Warren M. Washington was named the co-recipient of the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement — often described as the Nobel Prize for the environment — for 2019, according (PDF) to a February 12, 2019, press release. Naomi Oreskes, a member of NCSE's board of directors, described him as "not just a great scientist, but also a hero." Mann and Washington will share a $200,000 prize, to be awarded at a private ceremony in San Francisco on May 3, 2019.
Mann is Distinguished Professor of Atmospheric Science at Penn State University, with joint appointments in the Department of Geosciences and the Earth and Environmental Systems Institute. He is also director of the Penn State Earth System Science Center. A member of NCSE's Advisory Council, he received NCSE's Friend of the Planet Award in 2014. He discussed (PDF, pp. 4-6) his science and activism with Peter Buckland in RNCSE in 2016. Mann is scheduled to join NCSE's board of directors in April 2019.
