A Slap on the Wrist for Creationism
Creationist effort results in windfall for group defending the teaching of evolution
Fiyyaz Pirani was perplexed. As the CEO of RapidWristbands.com, he was pleased to receive a massive order for over a hundred thousand wristbands. But as a socially responsible entrepreneur, he was not pleased that the order, from a creationist ministry, was for wristbands saying “DEBUNK EVOLUTION.”
His solution? To donate the proceeds from the order—over $4000—to the National Center for Science Education, the nation’s foremost organization working to defend the integrity of science education against creationist assaults.
“We admire RapidWristband.com’s way of responding to unwelcome orders,” commented NCSE’s executive director Ann Reid. “It’s more ethical than refusing to fulfill them—and more constructive.” She explained that the donation would support NCSE’s efforts to defend the teaching of evolution.
In 2016 alone, legislation that would have undermined the teaching of evolution was introduced in Florida, Idaho, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and South Dakota. And Alabama decided to retain a disclaimer about evolution in its biology textbooks.
“I’m thrilled to donate to a cause I really believe in,” Pirani explained. “NCSE has labored for years to keep creationism out of the public schools, and I’m pleased that my company’s donation will help it continue its valuable work.”
RapidWristbands.com is a premier manufacturer of silicone wristbands, helping thousands of customers increase their brand awareness, promote their products and causes, raise money for campaigns and fundraisers, and expand membership numbers and affiliations.
