NCSE featured in coverage of Virginia climate change education legislation

Virginia State House.

The Henrico Citizen (February 26, 2024) discussed Virginia's House Bill 1088, which, if enacted, would require the state board of education to aid local school boards with instructional materials on climate change and environmental literacy.

NCSE Deputy Director Glenn Branch told the newspaper that the bill would have "a small difference," since it doesn't require the local school boards to use the provided materials, but it would "make it easier for educators to teach about climate change."

The story also noted that Virginia's state science standards received the grade of F for their treatment of climate change in the 2020 study from NCSE and the Texas Freedom Network Education Fund, "Making the Grade?"

House Bill 1088 passed the House of Delegates on a 53-46 vote on February 13, 2024 — on party lines, according to the Henrico Citizen — and is now with the Senate Education and Health subcommittee on public education.
