When we launched our online training sessions for science education advocates last fall, we started by surveying NCSE members about what they wanted to hear about. The most-requested topic was media training. I’m glad to say we’ll be doing a media training workshop tomorrow, February 27, at 11 a.m. PST/2 p.m. EST.
Media work isn’t necessarily the most crucial or most common part of what local citizens for science groups do, but I’m sure it’s the scariest. If you haven’t talked to a reporter before, or tried to write a press release, it’s scary to contemplate and hard to even know where to start.
This session will demystify media work, and help concerned citizens like you prepare and plan for your own media outreach. We’ll be joined by Erin Heath, a former journalist who is a policy specialist at the American Association for the Advancement of Science; Liz Craig, a freelance writer and member of the Kansas Citizens for Science board of directors who leads their media outreach efforts (including during the 1999 and 2005 science standards battles); and Robert Luhn, NCSE’s communications director.
