You are hereProtect Oklahoma public schools from antiscience billsOklahoma's HB 1674 and SB 758 would, if they become law, pose a grave threat to students and science education throughout the Sooner State. These bills single out evolution, climate change, and other scientific topics as supposedly scientifically "controversial," overriding the authority of local districts to establish clear curriculum, undercutting teachers' ability to maintain classroom discipline, and rewriting the rules for science classes, all with the goal of opening the door to creationist lessons and attacks on other mainstream sciences. This would open teachers and school districts to lawsuits, and undermine the quality of the education the students receive. HB 1674 will have its first committee hearing on Tuesday, February 19. It is essential that you contact the committee now, and that you attend the hearing on Tuesday if you can. Sign up below for more information on how to make your voice heard. Similar bills have been proposed and rejected in many states, and were even rejected by the Oklahoma legislature last year. Teachers, scientists, parents, and students have rallied against them in Oklahoma and elsewhere, demanding accurate, honest, up-to-date science education. Rather than creationist-manufactured controversy, they want science lessons to match the content of textbooks, state science standards, and the best guidance of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Science Teachers Association, and other leading science and education organizations. Concerned Sooners must make their voices heard to ensure that, when legislators debate this bill, they do not open science classroom doors to religious indoctrination, nonscience, or bad science.
