The January 2007 issue of Big Picture -- a publication of the Wellcome Trust in the United Kingdom that seeks to provide high-school students with "up-to-date information on research findings in biomedicine, and the social and ethical implications of this research" -- is devoted to evolution.
A recent article by the paleontologist Richard Fortey in the science pages of the Telegraph (January 30, 2007) is devoted to criticizing "intelligent design" creationism. Fortey's article, titled "The Ego and the ID," argues that "intelligent design" proponents succeed in the public sphere by taking advantage of the public's love of fairness and balance.
The British government's promised guidance on creationism for teachers seems to have arrived.
Only a month remains before Darwin Day! Colleges and universities, schools, libraries, museums, churches, civic groups, and just plain folks across the country -- and the world -- are preparing to celebrate Darwin Day, on or around February 12, in honor of the life and work of Charles Darwin. These events provide a marvelous opportunity not only to celebrate Darwin's birthday but also to engage in public outreach about science, evolution, and the importance of evolution education.
The New York Academy of Sciences presented a two-day conference on "Teaching evolution and the nature of science" in April 2006, aimed at answering such questions as: What are the basic tenets of the concept of evolution and how does understanding evolution play an essential role in comprehending science, and in particular, modern biology? How can science educators from elementary schools to college campuses respond to challenges from those who claim that intelligent design is as valid a theory as evolution?
The public radio show Speaking of Faith is doing a special show on Charles Darwin, his gradual development of the theory of evolution, and the various reactions, positive and negative, to the theory. The program is entitled "Evolution and Wonder -- Understanding Charles Darwin" and features an extensive interview with Darwin scholar James Moore, the author of The Post-Darwinian Controversies, and coauthor, with Adrian Desmond, of Darwin: The Life of a Tormented Evolutionist.
Writing on the space.com website (December 1, 2005), Seth Shostak of the SETI Institute debunks a common claim of the "intelligent design" movement: that "intelligent design" uses the same methodology, and thus is as scientifically credible, as the search for extraterrestrial intelligence.
A variety of innovative resources and strategies for improving evolution education -- from the American Institute of Biological Sciences and the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study, Steven D. Verhey of Central Washington University, and David Sloan Wilson of Binghamton University -- deserve a look.
