Scott honored with Anthropology in the Media Award


NCSE's executive director Eugenie C. Scott received the 2006 Anthropology in the Media Award, in recognition of "the successful communication of anthropology to the general public through the media," from the American Anthropological Association. According to the announcement in the October 2006 issue of the AAA's newletter Anthropology News:

While responding to creationist claims she sticks to the evidence for evolution without resorting to rhetorical flourish.

Not in Our Classrooms in Church and State


NCSE's executive director Eugenie C. Scott discussed the new book Not in Our Classrooms: Why Intelligent Design is Wrong for Our Schools, which she coedited with NCSE's deputy director Glenn Branch, with Church and State, the monthly journal of Americans United for Separation of Church and State.

Matzke profiled in Seed


NCSE's Nick Matzke is among nine people profiled under the rubric "Revolutionary Minds" in the November 2006 issue of Seed magazine, now available at newsstands. "At a time when intelligent-design rhetoric has persuaded some public schools to include the philosophy in their science curricula," the article begins, "Nick Matzke is championing the cause of science.

Barbara Forrest, who was among the expert witnesses to testify for the plaintiffs in Kitzmiller v. NCSE President in Berkeley Science Review


Kevin Padian, who serves as the president of NCSE's board of directors as well as a professor of integrative biology at the University of California, Berkeley, and a curator at the University of California Museum of Paleontology, is featured in the latest issue of Berkeley Science Review. The article, "In the matter of Berkeley v. Berkeley," focuses on the opposed roles played by Padian, one of the expert scientific witnesses for the plaintiffs in Kitzmiller v.

Scott's "The challenge of intelligent design" available on-line


Eugenie C. Scott's "The challenge of intelligent design," originally delivered as the Society of the Study of Evolution's Public Understanding of Evolution lecture at the Evolution 2003 conference held at California State University, Chico, is now available on-line, as the QCShow Author lecture of the week for May 8, 2006.

NCSE's Scott to be honored by Mount Holyoke


NCSE's executive director Eugenie C. Scott is to receive an honorary degree from Mount Holyoke College on May 28, 2006. Founded in 1837, Mount Holyoke is the nation's oldest continuing institution of higher learning for women. Speaking of Scott, the college's president Joanne V. Creighton said, "As science education has been under ideological and political assault in the U.S., you have defended the separation of church and state and the power of uncompromised scientific inquiry and knowledge.
